Tech Tip – How To Organise Windows Using "Snap Groups"

Windows 11 has upgraded Snap Assist giving Snap Layouts and Snap Groups. You can use these features to customise the sizes of the applications on the desktop, and to snap other applications in to your chosen layout.

Here is how to use it:

  • Hold the mouse over a running applications maximise button or press the Windows key + Z
  • Click on one of the zones in the layout of choice to snap the application to that particular zone
  • Use the Snap Assist tool to finish building a desktop layout of application windows
  • Selecting the group means that all of the associated applications will open in the same layout
  • If you add more Snap Groups, you can switch between them by selecting the Snap Group

NOTE: Snap layouts are tailored to the current screen size and orientation.

NOTE: Adding applications to a Snap Layout saves all the applications in that layout to a “Snap Group”.  In the taskbar, hovering the mouse over an application in an existing snap layout shows all of the applications in that Snap Group.
